Track suits, leg warmers and bright neon colors could be seen dashing through downtown Akron Saturday morning as 1,000 elves participated in the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s 80s-themed Selfless Elf 5k. The Foodbank celebrated the 12th running of the race, a signature event of its annual Holiday Campaign.

The family-friendly event encouraged both runners and walkers to dress in 80s-themed outfits and festive holiday costumes. This year’s elf socks were neon pink and green to celebrate the theme.

Race participants enjoyed tunes from the decade piped into the Foodbank’s warehouse by DJ Nick Duvé. Participants from all generations boogied down to the Electric Slide.

Santa and Mrs. Claus mingled with the crowd, taking photos with eager children and cheering on race participants.

Because of the community’s support, the race will help the Foodbank distribute enough food for thousands of meals to its network of 600 food pantries, meal sites, shelters, children and older adult programs within its eight-county service area. These programs will then distribute food directly to people in need.

“Often, our work feels very heavy,” said Foodbank President and CEO Dan Flowers. “We take our responsibility to feed families and to be good stewards of this community’s support very seriously. But today is a day when we come together to celebrate the resilience and generosity of our neighbors. Today is a day we raise vital funds for this work but have great fun doing it.”

Overall top female runner was Macy McRowe, 25, of Wadsworth who has run the race for 11 years. She’s been the female in first place for 10 years!

“I choose to run this race because it's a family tradition. I look forward to it every year and it's such an important nonprofit to fundraise for. It means a lot to me. As a teacher, I see the direct impact the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank has on the community.”

Overall top male runner was Josh Metzung, 26, of Chardon. It was his first time participating in the race. “This race is very important to do. It's a blessing if you're able to provide to anyone who is in need.”
The Most Dashing award winner was an adorable Buddy the Elf. Claira Nelson, 4, of Cuyahoga Falls, was voted best costume and also ran the race.

The VIP Elf raising more than $1,400, helping provide the equivalent of 4,200 meals, was Valerie Murray of Hudson.
